Methods of stone setting

Bezel setting is known to be the oldest technique used for attaching gemstones to jewelry. The stone is inserted into the bezel which acts as a metal frame holding the stone in place.

The most common and least complex of setting is the prong method. The reason for this is that it uses the least amount of metal to hold the stone in place.

Channel setting is a method which gemstones are set into a channel made from two metal strips. The stones are attached in a fashion that can run along the entire band of the ring hence forming a row.

Bead setting is when stone is set directly into metal using gravers or also known as burins. A hole is drilled into the metal surface, and then a ball burr is used to make a concave depression just the size of the stone.

Burnish setting, also sometimes referred to as flush setting, shot setting, or gypsy setting is similar to bead setting, but after the stone is inserted into the space, instead of using a graver to lift beads, a burnishing tool is used to push the metal all around the stone.
